What these charts show

The panel above streams live prices for six pairs, taken straight from the exchanges that trade them: BTC/USD, ETH/USD and BCH/USD from Coinbase, and XRP/USD, XMR/USD and LTC/USD from Bitfinex. Click any pair to switch the chart; the sparkline next to each one covers the current session.

That single detail — the price comes from one named exchange, not from an average — explains most of the confusion people have when comparing sites. A tracker like CoinMarketCap publishes a volume-weighted average across dozens of venues. The chart here publishes what Coinbase or Bitfinex actually printed. During calm markets the two agree within a few tenths of a percent. During a sharp move they can drift by a full percent or more, because liquidity drains from smaller venues faster than from large ones.

If you are about to trade, the exchange price is the one that matters, because that is the book your order will hit. If you are valuing a portfolio, the average is the fairer number.

Reading the chart without fooling yourself

Three habits prevent most beginner mistakes:

• Check the timeframe before you react. A candle that looks like a collapse on the 5-minute view is often invisible on the daily. Zoom out before deciding anything.
• Watch the vertical scale. Chart tools auto-fit the axis, so a 0.8% move and an 8% move can produce an identically dramatic shape. The percentage figure tells the truth; the picture does not.
• Treat thin-volume moves with suspicion. A spike on low volume usually reverses. The same spike on heavy volume usually does not.

What “live” really means here

Prices update continuously while the page is open — crypto markets never close, so there is no session gap the way there is with stocks. What you will not get is the order book itself: this is a price feed, not a depth view. If you need to see the resting bids and asks before placing a large order, open the book on the exchange you actually trade on.
